I've read about this but have never seen it locally...ever. Has anyone (who isn't trying to sell it) washed their hair with it?

No. It's just sort of gooey. It doesn't lather and I don't think it would get your hair clean. It's fun to tell people to use it for that, though. It's probably more effective as hair gel:

This isn't true shampoo ginger, but any zingiber is probably just as effective.

We have some growing here, but it's like Josh says in that it doesn't really lather up like shampoo. The smell is light and refreshing and maybe it does clean your hair a little bit. Mine doesn't usually get too dirty. The kids love using the stuff.
